What is Chiropractic?

According to The Association of Chiropractic Colleges, “Chiropractic is a health care discipline which emphasizes the inherent recuperative power of the body to heal itself without the use of drugs and surgery. The practice of chiropractic focuses on the relationship between structure (primarily the spine) and function (as coordinated by the nervous system) and how that relationship affects the preservation and restoration of health.” Misalignments of the vertebrae caused by poor posture or trauma result in pressure on the spinal cord, which may lead to diminished function and illness. The chiropractor seeks to analyze and correct these misalignments through spinal manipulation or adjustment.

The Goal of Chiropractic

Because chiropractic treatments are primarily applied to the spinal region, many incorrectly assume that chiropractors treat only back and neck pain and injury. While we do quickly and effectively eliminate back and neck pain, that is not our only goal. Our overall goal is to re-establish and to increase overall human health. In fact, according to a statement from The Association of Chiropractic Colleges, “The purpose of chiropractic is to optimize health.”

How It Works

The nervous system is a network of specialized cells that works together to control and coordinate the functions and reactions of ALL living cells, tissues, and organs in the body. It is literally the Master Control of everything in your body. These specialized nervous cells are composed into the brain, the brain stem, and the spinal cord.

When any part of the spinal column is mechanically or chemically disturbed, it may cause irritation on the enclosed nerves. This may leads to a breakdown in communication between the brain and the nerve’s final destination (organ). Optimal function of cells, organs, and tissues is thus compromised and overall health is decreased. This “disturbance” along the spinal column where a vertebra is “out of place” is known as a vertebral subluxation and is corrected first and foremost through manipulation. Also beneficial to correcting the problem is soft tissue work, stretching, nutrition, exercise and rehabilitation.

Due to the spinal cord’s location in the back, the chiropractor’s general focus is the back and neck in order to manipulate any irritations along the spinal cord and vertebrae. We often joke that if the nervous system were located in the foot, we might be considered “foot doctors.” We however do adjust other joints in the body to create the utmost amount of physiological movement on each joint.
